Realm Makers 2017

I just got back from Realm Makers 2017 and can I just say wow? For those of you who don’t know what Realm Makers is, Realm Makers is a conference for people of faith who write fantasy/science fiction (and their subgenres). For me, it is a place where I get to meet with like-minded people and talk about God, writing, and geekiness.

This year, I didn’t find out I was going until three weeks before the conference, which meant a flurry of excitement and packing. Then off I went to Reno. I spent five days meeting some amazing people I’ve only known from the internet, meeting fellow Enclave authors, meeting new writers just starting their journey as well as seasoned writers from whom I was able to glean nuggets of wisdom. However the biggest surprise was at the costume party where I found out Tainted won the REALM AWARD for Horror/Paranormal/Steampunk.

So exciting!

I would say this has been the best Realm Makers yet and I’m already excited to go next year. In the meantime, here are some pictures from my trip. Enjoy!

Realm Makers 2015 Recap

Now that I’ve had enough rest for my brain to properly function again, I wanted to recap my time at Realm Makers while it’s still fresh on my mind :).

For those of you who don’t know what Realm Makers is, it is a conference for Christian writers of speculative fiction (fantasy, science fiction, time travel, steampunk, etc…). And not just book writers, but screen writers, manga writers, and even illustrators. This year was Realm Maker’s third year and wow has it grown since I first attended two years ago! One hundred fifty attendees, stellar teachers including David Farland, Rober Lipaurulo, and Jeff Gerke, and lots of great classes.

This year was a different year for me. Instead of going as an attendee, I was one of the teachers and mentors. And I loved it! I loved meeting one-on-one with budding writers and brainstorming with them, helping them with their character development or story arc, or just encouraging them on their writing journey.

I also loved teaching. I have been blessed with wonderful teachers in the past and I now I am in the position to pass on what I have learned. I taught a class on how to show the gospel through fiction without preaching and participated on the fight scene panel. Both were well received and it warms my heart knowing that I helped other writers.

Of course, one of the best parts of Realm Makers is the costume banquet. I don’t know of any other conference where you get to dress up as a favorite character or genre for dinner :).  Here are some of my pictures from that evening (along with other moments at Realm Makers):

Realm Makers 2015 was a blast! I can’t wait until I can go back.  And for those of you interested in my steampunk costume, next week I will be doing a post on how to build your own costume without breaking the bank. So stay tuned!

Realm Makers Blog Voyage

Realm Makers Blog Voyage

Hi! Welcome to the Realm Makers Blog Voyage. I’m going to do something a little different. I know others along this blog hop have shared why they like Realm Makers and why you should go. I’m going to share my own experience at Realm Makers, but through pictures. Enjoy!

First reason to go to Realm Makers: all the people you get to meet. Authors, comic book writers, editors, publishers, friends. Last year was special to me because I met Kathy Tyers, one of my favorite authors, my editor Jeff Gerke, and many friends who I have only known online for years.

Second reason you should go to Realm Makers: the great classes. From worldviews and how they influence one’s writing to how to write a comic script to swordplay. I can guarantee you won’t see those kinds of classes at your typical conference 🙂

Realm MakersThird reason you should go: the banquet. Now this isn’t just any banquet, this is a dress up banquet with a sci-fi/fantasy twist. Some of the attendees spent months planning out their costume! Of course, you don’t have to dress up, but if you’ve secretly always wanted to wear that medieval dress or steampunk outfit, this is the place to do it 🙂

And the last reason? It is affordable ($250 plus room and food). You just can’t beat that!

Christian Speculative Cons

Today I am a guest over at Speculative Faith where I talk about the future of Realm Makers: the potential for this burgeoning alliance to grow into a true Christian speculative con. Head on over and join the discussion, especially if you have some ideas for panels, guests, and classes.

See you there!

Realm Makers: 2013

Realm Makers: 2013 was a blast. Imagine about 80 Christian speculative lovers gathered in one place for two days. I can’t believe the place didn’t explode! We had some great speakers including Jeff Gerke, Bryan Davis, L. B. Graham, Robert Treskillard and more. Classes and panels included writing horror, worldviews and world building, swordfighting, and comics. And of course a night of dinner and cosplay 🙂
